The 78 Cards: The Lovers

The Lovers, Rider Waite Tarot

“The moment you have in your heart this extraordinary thing called love and feel the depth, the delight, the ecstasy of it, you will discover that for you the world is transformed.”

J. Krishnamurti

Upright: choices, love & romance, opportunity
Reversed: separation, falling into temptation, ignorance

The Lovers is our card for Gemini, for young love and romance, for tough choices and temptations, and all of that good stuff that I tend to associate with cheesy romantic comedies and dramas. For a good amount of the card, it’s representative of a lot of what you would think it’d be.

The imagery with which we are presented is often riddled with biblical associations — the apple tree, the snake, the naked man and woman, and that beautiful looming angel-looking figure watching over all of it. The connection made to Adam & Eve reminds us of the naivety and temptation that follows this card along, and points out to us that love is not all sunshine and rainbows… although it can be!

In a lot of ways, I view this card as a blank canvas. It’s innocent, it’s honest, it’s open. We know these two humans to be pretty new humans. Young humans. They’re exploring the world and each other, and they have the potential at hand to create something really wonderful. But it could always swing the opposite way, and the way that things play out is in their hands.
