The 78 Cards: Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune, Rider Waite Tarot

Upright: cycles, good fortune, in sync with universe, fork in the road
Reversed: breaking cycles, resisting cycles, misfortune, out of sync

As the 10th card in the Major Arcana, the Wheel of Fortune comes often as a major turning point in our lives. Although not as dramatic or destructive as Death or The Tower, for example, the Wheel of Fortune still takes the reigns and directs us on the course it wants us to go in, whether we want that or not.

This card reminds us not only that we aren’t alone, but that sometimes there are strings being pulled that we don’t see, or can’t quite understand with our limited perspective. Sometimes, the cyclical motion of things — what goes around comes around and all of that good stuff — isn’t meant to be in our hands.

So, in reverse, it might be that you’re resisting change, that it feels like you’re more out of sync than in, that you’re on the brink of reaching some sort of breaking or turning point, but aren’t quite there yet.

When the Wheel shows up in a reading, it’s often a signal that you’re in sync with the universe, or that you need to be — a sign that there’s a purpose for the strange events that may be occurring around you. And it might just be time to spin the wheel of fate, see where it lands, and let the universe take hold of the outcome for a bit.
